An Open Letter from the All Star Host Committee:

Dear Friends,

It is our pleasure to introduce you to The Samaritans of New York, an incredible organization that operates NYC’s only 24-hour Suicide Prevention Hotline for 25+ years, and answered over 69,000 calls last year (www.samaritansnyc.org/aboutus). The Host Committee is working with them as they need help with money, publicity, events, sponsorship and in-kind donations. We invite you to join us in Supporting Samaritans of New York City Supporting Others!

By attending this event or by making additional donations, you are helping the problem of suicide that is getting a lot of attention in the news these days, through such stories as the death of British fashion designer Alexander McQueen, and Hillary Clinton’s speaking out on the suicide of Rutgers student Tyler Clementi. Even the music business has its stories, such as the suicide of Def Jam executive Shakir Stewart, or Alicia Keys and Mary J. Blige talking about depression. We were really surprised to hear from the Samaritans that more people have died from suicide in this country in the last few years than from AIDS or homicide. It seems obvious that we should all be doing our part to help out so we are helping put together this fundraiser so you can help too.

One in ten NYC public high school students have attempted suicide. Samaritans' education programs address this problem by training hundreds of school guidance counselors, psychologists and social workers each year. Samaritans also helps corporations and businesses with a wellness program (www.promotingcorporatewellness.com). And, for those who have lost a loved one to suicide (for every person who dies by suicide in the US, six are left seriously affected), Samaritans runs free monthly support groups.

Samaritans (a non-religious, non-profit) is facing ongoing budget cuts (www.nytimes.com/2010/06/15/nyregion/15nyc.html) so coming out to support this fundraiser will make a real difference. We would also like to help them as they seek new private, corporate and foundation support so please, put your thinking cap on, and put us in touch with other friends who might like to help. Simply email any of the committee members or Fiodhna O’Grady, Samaritans’ Director of Operations at samnyc32400@aol.com or call her at (212) 677-3009.

Here is a list of some of the things that money can buy them in a given year:
  • $5K funds the marketing of Samaritans’ crisis-response services to those in distress with ad sponsor recognition
  • $15K funds an entire three-month training class for new hotline volunteers (who in turn donate $100K in free labor)
  • $25K funds a year of Samaritans’ suicide-survivor support group program for those who have lost a loved one to suicide, including adding another meeting site
Samaritans can highlight its funders in its brochures, PSAs and radio, print and internet media distributed Citywide if you wish. One example of a larger project they did is their TV public service announcement that ad agency DeVito Fitterman did pro-bono. The PSA features Bill Withers’ voiceover and song "Lean on Me" (also pro-bono), and was directed by Ed Bianchi of Oz and Deadwood fame on HBO.

Thank you for your attention to this serious topic. Simply attending this Fundraiser means a lot. Making donations really helps. And, do please introduce us to other friends who, like you, could help in Supporting Samaritans of New York City Supporting Others.

Sincerely,

The All Star Host Committee
